The goal of this module is to bring the newly announced facebook social plugins (http://developers.facebook.com/plugins) in your drupal site.
The fb module is (has been) a platform for creating facebook applications (http://developers.facebook.com/docs/guides/canvas). I dont see a strong dependency between these two projects at this time. Whether we should merge them or continue to have separate projects, it's a good point to discuss but it's not important as far as the efforts are not duplicated. Small decoupled subsystems are usually easier to maintain/update etc.
I had a short communication with the maintainer of the fb module yesterday to make sure we dont duplicate efforts. I'll be happy to merge two projects into 1 if that's what makes more sense in this particular case.

Thanks for engaging this subject which I actually think is an important one for the Drupal community to discuss right now.

I'll just be honest, personally I'm struggling as a non-programmer, but designer and site-builder, to choose a platform (FB, FBConnect, FB_social, Connector) to integrate Facebook features into Drupal sites. I started with FB a year ago but it was not quite ready for prime time. Then I switched over to using FBConnect for some sort of basic integration. But FBConnect only addresses a very few options of integrating your site with Facebook. As I've seen FB (Drupal for Facebook) mature, and other modules pop onto the scene, and of course Facebook itself introduce new apis, I'm stuck in a position where these modules can't talk to each other nor can I migrate one to the other. What if I want Facebook Connect, the ability for users to post their nodes to their walls, and these new social plugins (such as likes or embeddable streams)? What if I want another combination of these?

I'm not a developer but just a "user" so I'm going to obviously have to deal with how you guys plan to organize your contributions and I will appreciate them graciously but it would seem to make sense to me to find a single platform (base module) for Drupal and Facebook integration. Users like me should be able to install this platform module and then optionally extend it with various submodule combinations. For something as important as integration with one of the web's most important websites we should mobilize in this direction. Dave's Drupal for Facebook (FB) would appear to be the platform that could do just this. He's I'm sure addressed this to you like he has in the FB issue queues.

I imagine a suite [of] modules where enabling just one (or two) is enough to enable the social plugins. While enabling additional modules will enable Facebook Connect, etc...

However, if at least you guys don't duplicate efforts and you believe these different modules could coexist on a Drupal site functioning well in tandem than maybe this is not necessary. From what I understand of the new social plugins is that they are in fact totally separate or independent of Facebook Connect.

Again, you guys know and understand these issues better than me. All I can do is describe my experience as a user.

Thanks Thomas for your comment, I feel the same way about the fracturing of the facebook api. we need to push the integration of the facebook api in one unified direction so that we can all be more productive. this may or may not mean that all facebook related modules need to be under one platform like D4FB but I think that we should all try to be moving forward on different aspects of the social graph so that all modules play well together and there aren't any overlaying features. the drupal community needs this to work well.

Yes, I agree with you Ken. Even if everyone doesn't adopt a single platform if at least a coordinated effort could arise out of this that would be great and save a lot of people's time.

any chance to have it for drupal 5 ?

I just made available an alpha release. Marking this issue as fixed. @evyawebsites , sorry I dont have plans backporting this to D5.
