D7 Storage API will do this.

Since D7 doesn't have half of the modules I use ready for prime-time yet, I'm also looking for D6 answer. Subscribing.

Edit: sorry, misread the module number here, thought it was D6

Agree with Rhino, D7 is at least 3-6 months out to cover any of the basic framework currently implemented in D6 sites.
This would be a nice addition to inject CCK fields with the option of Class for upload.

I am a new co-maintainer for Storage_API. Drupal 6 is coming toward end of life as soon as D8 is released which should be by the end of 2014. Due to that, I am going to be closing all 6.x issues as it's a hurdle too far to overcome with the amount of issues in the queue against this module.
