I am describing following points which will provide help in retrieving the mail and showing it in the content

configuring mailhandler

a) Enter valid email address
b) Folder = INBOX
c) POP3 or IMAP Mailbox = POP3
d) Mailbox domain = pop.gmail.com (for gmail account)
e) Mailbox port = 995
f) Mailbox username = xyz@gmail.com
g) Mailbox password = enter your password
h) Extra commands = /ssl/novalidate-cert
i) MIME preference = HTML
j) Security = Disabled

Note: Security = Enabled and MIME preference=HTML is an unsupported combination

k) Send error replies = What ever you want does not effect any thing
l) From header = empty for admin usage
m) Default commands = type: page
promote: 1
status: 1
(the settings of default commands are mine .... you can change it to what ever you like)
for more details about Default commands see http://drupal.org/node/38943

n) Delete messages after they are processed? = check the box ( If you selected "POP3" as your mailbox type, you must check this box)
o) Cron processing = Enabled
p) Message authentication method = Mailhandler Default

Things to remember

1) Send the mail from the email address which is registered with your drupal site or if your administrator, use the email address of the administrator because as a fresh installation the only person who is registered with your site is administrator. This is because, if you are not registered user then it will retrieve mail but you can not see it in the content.

2) Enable the "create page content" and "create story content" in the node module of permission

I think this is the enough information for running the Mailhandler
