There seems to be a conflict between Taxonomy Hide and the Menu Trails module. With Taxonomy Hide enabled, the ability to use taxonomy tags to activate the active menu trail with Menu Trails is gone. To reproduce the problem, it is not necessary to disable the Taxonomy Hide module, you can simply clear the check mark beside whatever taxonomy you are using to create your Menu Trail, and the appropriate menu will appear again.

I have no idea which module would be the best to work on to fix this issue.

Following up on this issue, to note that a solution is posted in the duplicate topic linked above in the Menu Trails issue queue. The solution is to adjust the module weights. Here is a direct link to more information about the solution:
