This is my very short experience with startlogic hosting company.
My account had been set up Aug. 8 2006.
Yes creating account with startlogic is simple and straightforward. It was good.
However my disappointment started right after that.
As most of the drupal community know that it needs "Lock_Tables" privilege to database.
By default, startlogic does not offer the privilege.
I called technical support and hold my phone almost 30 minutes.
When I connected to support guy, answer was short and simple. I need to submit ticket thru startlogic website.
I submitted a ticket right after that and waited about 48 hrs but no reply from supprt dept.
So I tried to call again about the issue that I need database privilege. I waited another 30min to connect to technical support guy. His answer was "Leave database name, user name, desired privileges, and so on.."
I thought it will solve problem in short time. I waited and waited...
Today, Aug. 14, 2006, still there are no response in the startlogic ticket system.
This morning, I called them to cancel my service with startlogic and the operator says "Send email to billing department and it will be process in 2 business days."

I do not know why they have 1-800 number which is not helpful at all. Nothing had been solved via phone support, nor email yet.

Conclusion: it may be different experience for each person, but I would not recommend startlogic to anyone.

NOW what's good hosting for Drupal??

why paypal?

Have a read of http://www.paypalsucks.com it's got some good information. I haven't run afoul of them yet to be honest, but many people's stories seem to make sense.

It's always worth excercising caution with companies like Paypal. Don't rely on them too heavily. :)

I was waiting a day after I submitted a ticket to close Startlogic Account.
Ok, I can wait 1 more day as the operator said usually it would take 48 hrs.
When I see the ticket lists that I have submitted, I see two opened tickets - one with tech support and the other is account close request. The tech support never been updated, sigh...
But I don't care as long as I stop Startlogic service.

I will report later process w/Startlogic.

Ahhh...what fun...

Wait until you get their 3 emails of "please stay with us" and "we will do anything" pleads... BUT... just respond nicely "No, please just cancel my account" no matter how temoting it is to tell them they suck. I have heard that once you are rude to them, they take forever to cancel.. one of their forum moderaters even confirmed that fact. I just responded as I said below ans my account was cancelled within a couple weeks and I think I may even have received a refund.

After I submitted account cancellation ticket 3 days ago, I didn't get any reply from them as I expected.
I called billing department and gave them my information for verification.
The operator says it will take 3 to 5 business days to cancel.
Let me report this in 5 days.

They will eventually cancel... just wait it out and don't get nasty with them :) I know it sucks, but at least they give you your money back if it takes awhile, which I never even asked for.

After submitting account cancellation ticket, about one month had been passed till I got money back to my bank account.
My personal short experience of using startlogic web hosting service is not happy.
Technical support is crucial for web developers who are using shared server. However startlogic ticket system response was too slow.

I went through something similar with them a while back. They are on my $hitlist as well, just below Aplus.net.

Startlogic.com are the worst company in the history of the planet, it seems like they have some outsourced helpdesk in india that are filing complaint tickets for you!
I have a downed site for hours now! you can contact no body to help you, support is only reachable by mail.. the live support is nothing to do with support, they can't do anything besides fill a high priority ticket to some heroin addict that's comatosed on a couch..

In one incident it took me three weeks to get someone to fix problems with the ftp: that after 4 megs uploaded it would hang... I filed 4 tickets, 6 emails - no body responded to my requests or my emails, until i got nasty with the sales department! now this problem has recurred, and after somebody "fixed" this problem, since then - i can't login...

it's 20 minutes wait minimum to get support, my site is down for over 12 hours now... no body there gives a shit.. if u have a tombstone website that get 20 visits a year, maybe u can handle it fine.. Their Rep tells me someone will be in touch with me in 24 - 48 hours!!! to have a 24-48 hours downtime!!! with no-one to hang!!! that's too much!
nothing is customizable in there.. the control panel sucks...

THIS COMPANY IS FRAUD! DO NOT WORK WITH THEM!!!!

It is Sept 26 2007 - I called for support in the morning... I waited over 1 hr with no response and gave up...

Meanwhile, I tried on line support - it took 10 mins before anyone came up!!!! And for every question, you have to wait 2 to 4 mins before you get and answer!

At this time, trying to cancel the account, I am on hold for over 44 mins and no answer! save for dumb music and repeated irritating messages!

How can this hosting company get the top rating ? What am I missing????????????? Are these guys paying off people to write positive reviews?

gofigure!

I am on the phone waiting right now, I have been trying to contact them for about two weeks now. I cannot log into the vdeck system they have.

They are really the worst hosting company!!!!

Crap, I wish I had googled drupal and startlogic together. I just opened my account today and was just about to start installing dupal :( What do you guys recommend, I registered my domain with them too. Anyone know if I have to wait a while before I can get my domain released after cancelling?

I never would recommend registering your domain name with the company you host with.

I think you have to wait 90 days to transfer a domain, but check their domain control panel to see if you can alter the nameserver (which you'll have to do if you change hosts.)

And read their guarantee page and terms and conditions.

~silverwing - doesn't use startlogic
