Already suggested in several other issues (like http://drupal.org/node/716612#comment-2912374):

Add some sort of "minimize/maximize" button for the Overlay, to allow you to break out of it on specific pages without having to navigate all the way to the modules page and disable it whole-sale. Like the shortcut bar on/off toggle, we'd store this setting in the session so it would persist across page loads. Not sure where to put the on/off toggle -- maybe in the toolbar -- and of course we'd need some design work done around this. But this would allow select advanced admins to turn the feature off for them while keeping it for their content editors, for whom it's more useful.

I don't really agree on that. Currently if you open an admin link without ?render=overlay you stay outside the overlay. So users can work outside the overlay when overlay.module is enabled.

What I had in mind with that maximize button:
The maximize button could be usefull if you open an admin link for example for a quick edit of an article, but then realize that you need more admin stuff to be done. The maximize button will load the overlay page (in this case the node/edit/%) into the parent window. You then can navigate through all admin pages without opening the overlay.

If you go back to the actual site (a non-admin page) and then click an admin-link, the overlay will open again.

Besides, I think that should be discussed in #786576: Maximize/minimize button.

I find it truly difficult to understand the usecase for this, sure one might want to move to admin pages without the overlay. But I can hardly imagine users perceive the overlay as a application window that could be minimized and maximized. Beside that, I am totally not sold on the idea that there is a significant trade off to having the overlay in all admin screens even non quick ones.

This late in the UI Freeze I would discourage such large changes without being able to test the usability or understand the usecase.

I did raise this with Webchick at DrupalCon Sydney as a potential improvement for Overlay in D8 (the Maximize/Break-out feature at least) as it something that has started to bug me personally and she did agree that it would be useful functionality but did mention that there are forthcoming changes to D8 that may no longer need this functionality.

However I think something for D7 in the contrib space would be nice because I do find myself constantly modifying the URL manually to breakout of the overlay.

When/If I move forward on this in Contrib I'll move this issue appropriately.
