I'm not even sure if this is possible in the way I'm thinking of...

My client has a business directory site (focused mainly on nonprofits) built with Drupal 6. His plan is that this weekend he is going to have some volunteers all log into the site using the same username and password to post nonprofit listings.

Then on each listing he wants a graphic link that reads something along the lines of "Is this you? Click here to take over this listing"; upon clicking on that link, they'll be taken to register for the account and that listing will be automatically assigned to them as though they were the original author, granting them access to edit any information in that listing right away.

Is there a way to do this that I'm missing somewhere?

I think this is possible using the rules module http://drupal.org/project/rules .

I've never tried it myself, but the title and description of the Claim Node Ownership module sounds promising (or might at least be a good place to start.)

Great, thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to try them both out and see which one works better. I'll let you know here :)
