Just finished development of my Drupal site:

http://www.arthistoryandinfo.com

Users can create artist, art movement, and museum pages. Users also have their own blog, can join groups, and talk in the forums. Users have their own profile pages and their own galleries. Users can contact each other using the contact form and private messaging. Users receive points for content they create, logging in, and posting statuses.

Check it out! If there are any errors, or anything that could be done better, please tell me.

It's an art site... I would use a more artistic bg image, and not worry much about how fast it loads. I used the same theme as a starter theme for a non-profit website, and used a big background: http://www.corysfoundation.org/drupal

Site looks great, but I do agree with mrgavindb about the background. In my opinion it doesn't necessarily have to be a large image, maybe just a solid color or gradient, but I just dislike the blue and black stripes... And I know that default by the theme design, but I would definitely change that.

Great work overall, especially on the user pages. I take it you used Advanced Profile Kit? I had some real problems with that and just ended up abandoning it. Nice work

I prefer a homepage that loads fast and is informative.
You might impress me the first time with a big arty image, but not on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th visit.
Add a nice background, but don't push down useful information with a large image.
Save the big images for the actual art.
My two cents.

I think a non-plain background (does not necessarily have to be a big image) would make the site and the content standout. I must say I do like the functionality of the site.
