If I completed a node with the multi-step form it publishes just fine. Once completed, if I want to edit only the first step I do so and click 'Next' to save the node and then exit the node edit screen. The node in question will now be unpublished.

Would it be possible to have the node never un publish (except of course through the publishing options) once it has been published after creation.

I'm not able to replicate the problem. What options do you have marked in the multistep configurations, as well as the node type settings?

I have the same issue with regular page content :(
