Drupal and Online Dictionary
kmi - August 17, 2006 - 20:25
Dear all!
I have a plan to build a community driven site dedicated to one of the smaller countries based on Drupal which seems great for this. On this site I'd like to create online dictionary allowing users to add words, translations and edit them. Thought that I could use Drupal for that, binding it with Meida Wiki somehow to create the dictionary (wiktionary).
Do you think this is a good idea? Maybe I should look for some Drupal module with better compatibility? What would be the better solution for such site?
Thank you in advance!
Best wishes, M.

Sounds good
You need to decide if this is a formal or informal project.
If formal, then do it the way dictionaries have always been done - allow all to add words in a Dev Area - a Flixinode or CCK "Word Node" and others to comment.
Out of this will come the multiple meansing of each word.
As a word reaches agreement, you can create a final version in the Dictionary. This might also allow commenting but normally omnly for points of fact - eg "here is an earlier useage..."

Thanks for your reply!
And what if it's an informal project?
You can set it up as a
You can set it up as a straight wikki, but it will either end up in a massive row, or (more likely) die.
People need to see leadership and committment to spend their time on projects, at least until it becomes established.
Even Wikkipedia has it's Gods who step in where there are rows and disputes.
I see... well, will have to
I see... well, will have to examine CCK closer.
Do you know any example of Drupal-based online dictionary, BTW?
Thanks.
CCK
I get some error using CCK (warning: array_merge_recursive() [function.array-merge-recursive]: Argument #2 is not an array in /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/drupal/modules/node.module on line 1610)
=(
Is there a way of implementing online dictionary through book content type? It seems that users will be able to participate in creating the content this way...

are you have some success in building online dictionary?
good idea
I think that this is a good idea. If there are more people working on a dicionary, maybe we can join forces?

If it must be done well
I think this dictionary development is a good project. My problem is your response when things get very tough; very discouraging perhaps very contrary to your expectation. I wish you clearly outline your plan, clearly stating the different stages and human resource needed. There is a tendency of eliminating all unforeseen challenges.
I think it must be done well if it must be done.
