Hi ,
I was wondering wich hosting provider's servers meet the criteria to optimally run drupal sites ... I am thinking of hosting with hostgator but if anyonw knows a better solution for drupal sites then can they pls let me know ?

It really depends on what you are trying to do. Hostgator is fairly reputable based on the accounts I've heard first hand. Of course, they do not give you the access you might get at other places, but then that might not be an issue (caveat emptor: all cPanels are not created equal and neither all WHM's).
I'm a little biased about hosting at this point, but you can always search Drupal.org for "hosting" and I'm sure you'll turn up some useful info.

I've been working with 1and1.com as my host for over a year now. Never a problem. Tons of freebees, and an easy to use admin area. They are also really quick to respond when you have a question.
