Ah, it has acquired seeds and is downloading slowly. It would be good however to have availability more certain to promote this, possibly feature in a book...
Hi Benjamin, this is a problem. Not sure what to do about it. I had a fast seed available, but it's down now. I could do HTTP/FTP download, but don't have the $ to host it.
I've seeded about 15 copies. Hopefully they'll still be out there. I should be able to get the fast seed up towards the end of the month.
Hi vacilando, I'm working on this. I just got a new job (hurray!), but will get some time to work over the weekend. I had a dedicated seed, but they apparently stopped seeding. I was looking for a paid bittorrent seeding company, but couldn't find one...
Hi guys, I have a new version I'm building this weekend. There is an open bug about Drupal not being compatible with PHP 5.3, which is the default for Ubuntu 10.04.
Anyways, I worked this out, and I'm building a new image with a bunch of updates this weekend. Plus, I'll get my 400kbs seed back online. So it's a win for everybody.
Thanks for checking out the project. If you find any problems of have any suggestions, write up an issue and I'll add them in.
I'd like to donate my webservers upload speed for this project.
To permanently solve this problem I thought maybe webseeding would be a solution.
I tried to get my webserver to seed a torrent, but am unable to get it to work.
When I complete the torrent on my own pc (after 3 days of downloading I'm at 50%), I will upload it to my webserver and will provide a http location from which people can download the file.
Not sure how the webserver will react under a lot of download stress though.
How many downloads does this get a day? At the moment about 1-3 every day I estimate?
It can handle that easily, and if not I possibly have another solution, maybe two :)
This Quickstart project rocks: it helps people to start developing for Drupal, it would be ashame if it wouldn't reach full potential because of download speeds.
does that mean we don't need a http mirror?
I like your quickstart initiative and want to support it if that helps.
Just let me know, I'll gladly setup one.
I got the webseeding to work! No extra steps from your end are neccesary.
It is now apearing as a regular peer, so when people start to download the torrent the server will seed to them.
It is online 24/7 and will seed at about 400-700 KBytes/s per peer.
I've set the max to 1000 KB/s times 3 peers so it won't overload my server.
It works fine when I torrent the image to my home computer, but to be sure maybe someone can test and confirm if the webseed works for everyone?
btw, a handy torrent client for people that don't like to install a full client like Vuze (former Azeureus) or uTorrent is Firetorrent.
It's a handy Firefox addon https://addons.mozilla.org/nl/firefox/addon/10931/
and thanks for Quickstart 0.6, I've tested it in Virtualbox under Windows 7 yesterday and it works like a charm. This will definitely help me with my Drupal dev skills.
Last week I've also emailed Studenten Net Twente (Student Net from the local University here in Enschede) with a request to helpout with seeding the torrent.
This week they answered, and said that they will help seeding with their server! So kudos to SNT!
I noticed with a test download that my webserver and the webseed from SNT are both seeding to peers that connect to the tracker at openbittorrent.com, but not to peers that connect with the tracker on publicbt.com.
So peers that only connect to the tracker at publicbt.com may not get fast download speeds, connecting to openbittorent.com as tracker wil solve this problem.
Í'm not sure how that works with the torrent protocol. I thought they would be interconnected, but apparently they are not (always).
Wow S1l, that's really awesome. How cool is open source? Thanks for helping with the seeding. I posted a thankyou on the project page. If you want me to include a link to the group at SNT, write it up, and I'll put it up there as well.
Thanks again. The seeding makes this easier for everyone who is using it,
Trying to download 1.0 but there are no seeders. I have a server with 100mbit upload link running as a seedbox. If I manage to download (or MichaelCole can upload) both 32 an 64 bit images to my server i could seed for a month or so.
The current Bittorrent setup doesn't seem to be a feasible method for distributing this file. Since Drupal is open source, it might work better to host the Drupal Quickstart file on SourceForge, or some other open source software host, which can handle the band width and has much higher availability. Perhaps have both methods available so people can have a choice of which method they prefer.
I would love to use Quickstart for testing, but both qBittorrent and uTorrent on Windows are showing zero seeds with the tracker at OpenBittorrent down, all while I'm able to access other torrent content, and I do not have access to a Mac.
I finally finished the download using utorrent, it took 9 hours. I think the best method to distribute the file is with Mediafire since it's fast, free, and support parallel download.
The main problem at the moment is that the tracker at openbittorrent is frequently down so clients have to rely on DHT. It might be worthwhile to add a few other trackers.
Mirror
I'm currently uploading the amd64 1.0 version to my Amazon S3, once it's done I'll post the url to the direct download (in about 4-5 hours if no errors occur).
If people like this I can do the same for the 386 version, and for all upcoming Quickstart versions and variants.
Amazon S3 question
Do people know how I can give MichaelCole a Amazon S3 login that only gives him read/write access to 1 specific bucket (and not my entire account).
This way Michael, I could give you a login and you would be able to upload directly to the Amazon S3 bucket when you create a new Quickstart version. (I'm using CloudBerry Explorer, it's as easy as FTP)
costs
Amazon S3 is not free (~ 0.16 USD per Quickstart download times XX ? users), but those costs are on me (a small price to pay as a thank you to Michael for his work on Quickstart, I use it every day).
Alternatives
Alternatively we could look for a free hosting service, but I find all free services are free upto 1 GB of data (or don't even allow files that big) and Quickstart is 1.1 GB.
Why Amazon S3
And a big plus about using Amazon S3: it's fast every time from all around the world (and it has no download waiting times :)
@denny85 I think Megaupload has a max filesize of 1024 MB (per file)
Megaupload states:
"If you'd like your file to be downloadable by everyone, make sure not to exceed the limit of 1024 MB. Larger files can only be downloaded by premium users."
I haven't found any free services that let you share files with a filesize > 1GB.
And people will probably get waiting time counters when downloading as a free user, I'd rather let them spend that time on Drupal ;)
I'm currently downloading the 32 bit version (torrent), ETA = ~40 minutes (1 fast peer is seeding at the moment).
When I have the file complete, I'll mirror it on Amazon S3 too.
@s1 Ok, here is what I will do. Once I download the files I will break them into pieces and upload them as parts on Megaupload. Hopefully that might help to fellow drupalites. And post the links here later on. Thanks again
@denny84: I appreciate your efforts, but personally I don't think a Megadownload mirror is necessary if we have torrents plus Amazon S3.
What's the advantage of Megadownload over having direct http links from Amazon? Don't worry about the Amazon costs, I got it covered (I estimate it's only about 20 USD a month).
I'll give MichaelCole a Amazon S3 login and we'll all have superfast Quickstart downloads all the time without having what in my view are 'negatives' in terms of useability like advertisements/waiting time/multiple files.
The i384 version is uploading to Amazon, ETA ~3-4 hours.
I'll post a download location when its ready.
@s1 I understand your concern but I have my ISP blocking on torrents. And many people might have similar issues.
So to avoid future problems, this is my effort to mitigate the issue. And also this might save some of your bandwidth just in case.
Here are mirrored links for 64bit version divided in 4 parts.
@denny84: I am not talking about torrents only, these Amazon S3 mirrors are http so everybody should be able to download them:
'torrents plus Amazon S3', or maybe even better: Amazon S3 http links only, that way we can see how popular Quickstart is from the Amazon data usage statistics :) It may be nice for MichaelCole to see how many people are using Quickstart.
Thanks for all the links. Unfortunately I am having problem with i386 version on my 32 bit laptop. Here is a screenshot of what error I am getting. Is it just me or is it because of virtualbox version 4.0.8? Anyone else getting same error?
Could we get a donate link up for the person donating the bandwidth? It may not be much per person but it can add up. If everyone who is able donated even $1, that would pay for 5 people who didn't...
@Michelle: what a nice gesture, I love it, but I'm affraid I have to refuse.
I really appreciate the gesture, but I'd rather not manage a lot of small donations, I'm affraid it would take a lot of precious time because formally I'd have to pay taxes over those, so I would have to put all the small donations in my administration sheet etc.
One of the reasons I provide the Amazon S3 download location is so people can save time by being able to download Quickstart faster and easier.
I estimated costs will be about 20-30 USD a month, which I'm happy to pay because Quickstart makes my Drupal developer life easier almost every day :)
I would suggest people that want to do something in return for the Amazon hosting: just 'pay it forward': help someone else solve a (Drupal) issue.
If we all do that we'd have 100's of issues solved and we'll all benefit :)
And I believe MichaelCole is the one putting his blood, sweat and tears into the Quickstart project, not me.
We're using another Amazon bucket now (drupal-quickstart instead of drupalquickstart).
Want to help seeding the new torrent?
You can stop the old torrent, and seed the new torrent without having to re-download the file.
If you put the new file in the same location as the old file your download client will re-check the file and will start seeding.
No torrenting possible on the PC you're at?
losing the ?torrent from the url's would give you a direct download link to the files.
To keep Amazon S3 hosting costs to a minimum please use the torrent if possible on the pc you're working on.
Torrenting is probably faster than downloading from the direct url, because
1) Amazon is one of the seeders (same speed as direct download)
2) we're all seeding together
This is great! I'm excited about this. I'd like to see if we can change the hash on the torrents in the new bucket so we don't lose existing seeds. This might take a couple of days (waiting for AmazonAWS forums). Once that is sorted, I'll change the links on the home page to the new official torrents.
Whatever links you use to download Quickstart, you'll get the same data. We're just sorting out seeding and building the best swarm possible :-)
If you are unable to download the non-torrent version of the file, here's a possible reason - the URL is incorrect. Here is the correct version of the direct-download file:

I'm trying to use the two open trackers: http://openbittorrent.com/ and http://publicbt.com/
Looks like they recommend these trackers in the .torrent:
udp://tracker.openbittorrent.com:80
udp://tracker.publicbt.com:80/announce
udp://tracker.openbittorrent.com:80/announce
I can edit the torrent here: http://torrenteditor.com/edit.php
this would hopefully keep the hash and not break the existing seeders.
Anyone have advice on how to improve this plan? Additional trackers? Better edit method?
Thanks,

I'm grabbing both files on my seedbox and will continue to seed till the next version is out or the tracker dies.

francis.patterson commentedIf you are unable to download the non-torrent version of the file, here's a possible reason - the URL is incorrect. Here is the correct version of the direct-download file:
http://drupalquickstart.s3.amazonaws.com/Quickstart-1.0-i386.ova?ova

The url is correct, you're probably using old url's. Did you check #50?
And whether or not you use ?ova or ?helloworld doesn't matter,
everything that is not ?torrent just redirects to the direct download location.
