support Content Taxonomy?

Is there any way to support fileds added to a custom content type using Content Taxonomy? Or does this module only work with the core taxonomy module.

I ask because I now have the requirement to classify vocabularies by Group, but my taxonomies are being implemented via cck and Content Taxonomy, at the moment,
