I had to write a little code to generate biblio author and keywords blocks based on frequency of use in publications. The code provides an author and keywords block both of which are configurable like tagadelic (quantity of sizes and number of words to show). It is dependent on tagadelic, but need not be.

Should I clean this up and submit it as a patch? If so, do you want me to remove the dependency on tagadelic (some css, weighting math, and sorting functions)? Also is d6 or d7 preferable?

I tried using tagadelic and views cloud modules to accomplish this, but couldn't without writing some code.

Sure that would be great. I don't think its a problem having it dependent on tagadelic. There would just be check in the code to make sure that tagadelic is enabled before trying to use it.
