I have a content type 'message'.

In my menu I created a menu item (messages) that links to a table view of the 'messages'.
What I need to do is some how display the number of new and updated 'message' nodes in the menu.

So my menu item displays like this:

messages (3) - three being the number of new and updated messages to the current user.

Anyone know of a module or a way to do this?

I think you would need to create a module to accomplish this. Modules can update menus on every page load. You might want to look at the http://drupal.org/project/privatemsg module. If you want to try to create your own module the code in the privatemsg module will be helpful to you. Try out the demo!
