what is it need to configure to be able to test the xpi file over a new drupal installation?

currently:
1. using drupal 4.7.3 (having trouble with modules over cvs)
2. moved drupman zipped contents into modules/drupman
3. activated all the submodules on admin/modules
4. turned on signed.applets.codebase_principal_support in firefox about:config
5. turned off security.checkloaduri, just in case
6. the readme file speaks about "site url" and "url" for xml-rpc. where are those loaded?
7. changed sample urls in config.js, not sure of what is required
8. xul file stays at the loading message
9. downloaded xpi loads on firefox and loads the demo, but adding a new site shows "unavailable"

Further testing shows there was a delay, where "unavailable" changed to "logged out"
The XPI file seems to work for testing.
Won't try again with the xul file for now.
