I did this a long time ago, but can't remember where the relevant code is stored.

I want to put a message that login is only available to pre-authorised users.

so where is it stored to hack into?

a good text editor that will let you search and/or replace multiple files/folders at once.

Alternately, you can always copy 3-5 words from the string of characters you're looking to replace and search Drupal.org and/or Google for them and hope that some of the results reference the file you're looking for.
