DevSeed,
I'm a huge fan of your software, just FYI.
I have had trouble getting MN, MB, and OA to work because I have been installing isolated modules within my site without knowing how to configure them correctly.
Now I plan to use the installations for ManagingNews, MapBox, and OpenAtrium in an effort to have your preset configurations already in place, installing MN on [site].com/news, MB on [site].com/map, and OA on [site].com/team. I fear, though, that having several installations of Drupal core is a bad idea. How do I get all the configurations of MN, MB, and OA within one site without having to install core several times?
Thanks for all your help! And great job with the meetups. I personally love the current format of them.
Anthony

alex_b commentedThanks for the flowers :-)
It's rather the other way round: it's a bad idea to try merging them all into one and the same base directory. You can do it, but I don't see the reason why you would. By doing it, you'll have to copy the profile directory of MN and OA into Drupal's profiles/ directory and managing change (new versions) on that level - without any real benefit from it.
BTW, mapbox is not a Drupal application.
Fixed?

tglynn commentedThanks a lot Alex.
I think I understand: I'll go ahead with using the MN installation for [site].com/news and the OA installation for [site].com/team.
I will read through d.o to learn how to manage the whole site when there are several installations. My first question is how to deal with multiple admin areas (to manage each section with a different install). D.o probably details all that pretty well but if you have any advice off the top of your head, I would deeply appreciate it.
You've definitely solved the original question about how to move forward, and I'll post here when I get to doing the installations tonight. Sounds straightfoward enough to do all the installs in the different directories. Afterward, I'll cross the "managing multiple installs" bridge.
Thanks again.

tglynn commentedInstallation worked great and carried over many of the layout elements of the root installation, which is great.
Fixed.

kobnim commented@tonioman: I am looking to do something similar. Could you share what you have learned, regarding multiple installations on a single site? Are there any good references on this? Thanks. (P.S. What does "d.o." stands for?)

danoprey commentedI too am looking to combine Open Atrium and Managing news. I don't think using two installs would work for what I'm trying to achieve, but it would be great to hear what you've learnt in case.
From a thread on OA Forum, it sounds very difficult.

john.karahalis commentedkobnim: d.o is drupal.org
tonioman: I would also love to know what learned in getting these two platforms to play together. I am trying to do something similar myself.

tglynn commentedJohn and Danoprey,
I learned that multiple distributions cannot be merged onto one site.
Specifically for these three items -- mapping, open atrium, and managing news -- mapping is the easiest to blend into any site, simply because there are so many options out there for us. (But be forwarned that if you load a lot of nodes within Drupal mapping, it could freeze the visitors browser.)
Soon, we will have a lot of the functionality that you find in distributions in Features and in Drupal apps of some kind, in code that you can unpack onto a site.
