I started by downloading Drupal 6 and I would like to add Ubercart but Ubercart says it does not work with Drupal 6. Should I go back and start over with Drupal 5?

You need to download the Drupal 6 version of Ubercart. Sounds like you downloaded the Drupal 5 version instead.

You've downloaded the wrong Ubercart version. You want http://ftp.drupal.org/files/projects/ubercart-6.x-2.2.tar.gz
