The 2.x series allowed a (system-wide) configuration of the API URL, allowing site admins to switch e.g. from Twitter to identi.ca.

My suggestion: Allow the site admin to create a list of Twitter(like) services, containing a descriptive name and the API URL. When a user adds a new "Twitter" account, he selects one of these services. This would allow users to use the microblogging service(s) of their choice.
