No bar for unpublished nodes

Is it possible to have the bar not show on nodes that are not published? I run a motorsports news site where some of the contributors are sometimes less than savvy when it comes to tech stuff. We have an editorial review process where the node stay unpublished until it has been blessed by an editor. I'd hate for a contributor to share his story before it's published, then everyone in his network will try to go but get an access denied message.
