access permission to content in workspace by role

Hi to all and thank you to the developers of this module!

I have a feature request, I used Drupal in 3, 4 website but I'm not familiar with php:
In one of this (driven to no-profit organizations in Italy), I have several content for various users and I setted their permission by role.
I'm using workspace as general framwork for users' contents and Book module as wiki space but I want give permission to create new books only to users have Moderators role (mantaining for all other roles the permission to modify wiki). I could use og setting and setting og home page's permissions as I need, but:
1) I don't want use og at the moment
2) og could be need to manage other kind of group not book based

Someone can help me patching the module to have a configuration choise about simply hiding some content to some role?
