Riff News redesign

fgm - August 29, 2006 - 06:51

I'm glad to introduce the recently redesigned Riff News web site, relaunched under Drupal 4.7 a few weeks ago.

Riff News is a news and technical resource for french-speaking computer professionals, from technical product news to tips and tricks or code fragments, and incorporates a fairly large dictionary of computing, with over 5 000 original entries. It is part of the OSInet set of sites.

The site was switched to Drupal on 01/07/06 00h00 and, a few days later, we started noticing a rise in Alexa ranking. While the previous version of the site, using a homegrown CMS, had lagged near rank 900 000 with a 1.75 per million "reach", the new drupalized version haas been climbing almost daily, and entered Alexa's Top100K on 23/08/06 at rank 97 000 and reach 15 per million. Today, on 29/08/06, after 60 days on Drupal, it is ranked 42 000 and reach 35 per million.

Technically the site uses several modules:

  • an original plain PHP theme by Oliska
  • open sourced modules I created for OSInet:
  • other standard Drupal modules, often rather heavily patched:
    • banner
    • codefilter
    • devel
    • front
    • pathauto
    • poormanscron
    • sitemenu
    • taxonomy_context
    • xstatistics
  • a few specific modules, notably one for the main node content type, which includes nonstandard publishing rules and editor information, and another for all site-specific content like blocks
