Choose a theme or create one from scratch?

Hello,

I am looking into different themes, and I still wonder if I wouldn't be better off creating one from scratch.

Can someone tell me how long it can take to build a theme from scratch? Compared with modifying a theme.

I am quite new to Drupal. The site will become an ecommerce website. It will also be a multisite with one shared theme.
I can give more precision if needed.

For what I can read, it seems easier to modify a theme instead of creating one. At the same time, I may not be able to be as creative.

Depends on what you need, your experience with theming Drupal sites, how much time you have, etc.

If you can find a theme that closely matches your needs, then it's probably quicker to adapt it or create a sub-theme. If you want to have a unique theme/site, then it's best to either theme from scratch or go with a generic base theme (such as Zen) and create a sub-theme.

Why not go for the best of both worlds? Choose a base/starter theme to work with, and then customize it with a sub-theme of your own. This way, you'll have the basic structure for your Drupal site, and then build upon the base theme to customize the look-and-feel of your site.
