For some menus, for instance javascript-based drop-down menus, it's important that menu items are expanded. It's quite annoying to have to go to the menu editing page every time you create a new node, just to expand the menu entry. A simple checkbox - "keep menu item expanded" - in the menu settings pane for the new node.

If this is too late for 7.x, please move it to 8.x.
