The Open Source Labs (OSL), one of Drupal's key contributors, is organizing a OSL Rackathon. In return for donations, OSL is putting the names of donors up on their racks. They'll be posting pictures of those racks on a regular basis. The money from the Rackathon goes to cover the cost of hosting. Some of these costs include the physical space, power, network connectivity, and their support staff (the time it takes to run the Drupal servers, for instance). For more information and to make a contribution, visit http://osuosl.org/contribute/rackathon. Thanks OSL!

20 dollars for OSU / Infra Drupal.org, when I get a shot of the rack, I'll post it at my blog.

So, how much are you willing to chip in?

I've made my contribution knowing that OSL has done an excellent job hosting drupal.org since July 2006.

From http://osuosl.org/hosting/clients -

Drupal is a php based content management system (CMS) used in many installations worldwide, along with quite a few here at OSU. Drupal needed assistance with a webserver that was crippled under the load of it's own popularity. With the financial help of Drupal's users, the OSL has built a cluster for Drupal's sites that can scale along with the growth of it's userbase.

Not only do they host drupal.org and dozens of other open source projects, but OSL is powered by Drupal!

Please donate to the OSL Rackathon and help both OSL and Drupal. Here is how OSL states the donations will be used:

What are the donations used for? We provide managed and unmanaged hosting for non-profit open source projects. This is done with external funding. The goal here is that the open source developers themselves do not need to pay for the hosting. Project hosting comes with access to managed services that we provide above and beyond just physical space for their server. Also, when a project needs help with a box that has gone down, we staff individuals to jump in and work the console for them. Your donation helps to fund:

* Physical rackspace & power
* Bandwidth and Internet connectivity
* Shared services (backups, loghosting, monitoring, and more)
* Support staff (often billed in commercial colo facilities as "smart hands" support)
* Other OSL services such as ftp.osuosl.org
* Increased capacity for more open source projects to be hosted here!

By the way, OSL mentions its thanks to Angie Byron, a.k.a. webchick, for her graphics. Good contribution Angie, and thanks for all that you do for Drupal. Your list of project contributions in just over a year is quite impressive!!!

I try to help out where I can. :)

But, yes. Excellent cause, and money going here helps to support our entire infrastructure, as well as the infrastructure of several other open source projects. It's a great thing to do. :)

I'm just hoping the Drupal community steps up to the plate to help out with OSL's needs. I think OSL's role in helping move OSS projects along is crucial.
