I'd like to know what file actually generates the "page not found" so that I may add some additional text to it. Does anyone know?

in admin/settings you can define your own 404 page in form of a node...

Create a story or page with the content you want displayed. Make note of the node number or url. If you are not using clean URLs, specify the part after "?q=". Enter that information in administer > Settings > Error Handling
