After going to settings -> checkmail and entering my mail server information I'm getting

I've triple checked the server settings and they are correct. I get my mail from this server just fine. If I rename checkmail.module to checkmail.module.bad I can get the site to load but checkmail doesn't work, obviously.

I realize that this may be related to a memory issue, but there are no problems and drupal is speedy until adding this module.

I searched the bug database for all bugs related to this issue and received NO results, so I'm assuming this is a new bug.

I've just taken over maintainership of this module, but I'm not going to support the 4.7.x branch. If you're still using or interested in using this module, I have just created a 5.x branch and will be working on more changes to it over the next couple of weeks or months. After that, I'll probably port it to Drupal 6.x.
