Display, the child nodes in the main page

Hi,
I was wondering if it would be possible, to add the child nodes to the main page when you select a taxonomy in the menu.
At the moment if you have descendents turned off and you do not have anything allocated to the parent vocab, nothing is displayed on the main page, it would be nice to see the child vocab terms displayed, as they are in the Main menu.

Something similar to the book module if possible.

if anyone has any suggestions on how i could do this myself, then i would appreciate some help
