Instead of Image Galleries can this module be used to diplay images that are grouped by views?

indeed. there is now a terrific image_views integration so IMO, image_gallery is deprecated. would be great if the XML generation was based on a View and not image_gallery.

This is off my radar atm. A future feature of SWF Tools (see link below) for sure, since SWF Tools will be looking at delivering file lists of all sorts into Flash players.
