First Google Maps Mashup out of Qatar powered by Drupal (and featured on Google Maps Mania)

Google Maps Mania is leading with a story today on the First Qatar Google Maps mashup. The site is Qatar Living which is a Drupal powered community site for people living in the State of Qatar (it's a tiny country in the Middle East next to Saudi Arabia for the geographically challenged). The cool thing about the mashup is that all the places on the map are user-generated - the users create a "Place" on the map and write up a short review on it.

The map is powered by the GMap module which is a great start if you want to whip together a quick Google Maps Mashup in Drupal. This is still a work in progress - next steps are using different pointers based on taxonomy, filtering by taxonomy term (which theoretically can be done with Views but I've had no luck. Also, it may be more elegant doing it client side using Javascript) and giving users the ability to rate places.

So come by and have a look at the map of Qatar and check out a sample map node (that's Orry, the mascot of the upcoming Asian Games 2006).

I'll try to whip something together - although I highly recommend you check out Zack's video cast : http://zacker.org/screencast-drupal-mashup-machine

The main difference is that I am using the Gmap module's feature which allows you to interactivey choose the location on the map (instead of having to type in the co-ordinates)

To all viewers,

Drupal or what ever his organizations name is, was not the first person or business to implement a "Doha Map" on the web. If you will view the link which I will provide at the end of this message you will notice that there is another "Doha Map" out on the web and was released with affective promotion and marketing stragtegy compared to the http://www.qatarliving.com/

The purpose of this message is to stop Drupal and his organization from releasing false information regarding the "First Doha Map" in Qatar. Please view the link below so that you can judge who was the first one to release "Doha Map" and which "Doha Map" you would prefer to use!
