We recently upgraded to Drupal 6.17 and copied over our old database from our 5 version. The content types all came in, but the fields did not. On the content types page, when I go to "Manage Fields" next to a content type I get the regular "edit" page. There are no buttons listed at the top of this page to Edit, Manage Fields, or Display fields. No fields are displayed, not even the option to add new.

I developed this site on my localhost wamp prior to moving it to staging. We imported the same version 5 database on my localhost and I had no problems with the fields importing with the content types. I have all modules on and all permissions checked for my admin role. What am I missing? Why aren't they there anymore?

Also I checked my database and the fields are listed.

There are special instructions in

http://drupal.org/project/cck

for upgrading cck and cck field modules from D5 to D6.

Just another bit of info: I ensured all the modules were checked and enabled, they were, then I ran update.php and it said all of those modules are in the folder, but not enabled. So somewhere there is a conflict. I hope your solution works!

And to clarity -- the modules folder was copied over from my localhost which was a functioning Drupal 6 site using our database from drupal 5. So the module installed on staging is currently a version 6 module -- now we're just trying to insert the database from our version 5 so we don't have to recreate all the content types. Following the same steps we did with localhost, which was a success, but now it's not working.

Also check http://drupal.org/requirements against the destination server. Drupal 6 is much more demanding. Especially the PHP memory limit, with several modules installed, could need to be high.

I really appreciate your help! I tried the steps from you link and no success: I moved all contributed and custom modules out of the modules folder to make sure there were no conflicts. Then I downloaded a fresh copy of CCK (just to be sure) and installed and enabled it. So I only had that and the core modules enabled. I ran update.php and once again it is not recognizing that I have the modules installed. It says

"Updates for CCK-related modules are not run until the modules are enabled on the administer modules page. When you enable them, you'll need to return to update.php and run the remaining updates."

But everything IS enabled.

This is still an issue so hoping someone has another suggestion. I am working with the modules folder under sites/all/modules and not the other one found at the root a couple levels up. This doesn't have anything to do with it, correct? What is the difference anyway?

I found this forum post and the .png is exactly what I am getting. I don't get a resolution though from the post, although it says it was closed b/c it was fixed. Can anyone explain how I fix this?

The issue in that link was not important. It was just that the error message was not saying everything that it should say, if you did it wrong and hadn't enabled the content module first. So, they just fixed the text of the message.

"sites/all/modules" is fine. The other "modules" directory is only for core modules.

I thought I was onto something. The screenshot in that post is exactly what I'm getting. I went back and switched the database back to 5, upgraded all the CCK modules to the latest 5 version (which they were already at 5.x-1.10), ran update.php in which nothing happened, then disabled all modules and removed from the modules folder, then switched the database back to 6.17, installed the latest CCK from this page, enabled them, ran the update, and still got the message that the modules are in the folder, but they are not enabled. I don't understand where the break is.

I am about to pull my hair out. I'm having a really hard time finding a solution anywhere. I don't know what to do next.

You enabled CCK and its included modules in admin/build/modules and then update.php says that they are still not enabled?

This may be worth a look in the database, in the "system" table, to find these CCK modules, and check
- their "status" (0 or 1 if they are enabled) and
- their "filename" (their path, to make sure that drupal reads the right module files and isn't reading from a copy forgotten somewhere).

bzsim’s picture

The only rows listed are the main rows of filename, name, type, status, throttle, bootstrap, etc. They are listed vertically in rows whereas in my localhost database those are the headers of the table listed horizontally with all the modules as the rows. So something is definitely not right since my Modules page shows me CCK installed and enabled.

I can post a screenshot if you tell me how.

cog.rusty’s picture

You are looking at the table's "stucture" tab, you are not "browsing" the table. That is why you see the field names arranged vertically.

bzsim’s picture

Duh, sorry, I'm just getting used to all this. OK now that I have the right tab open, I see the CCK modules and they all have a 1. For example: sites/all/modules/cck/modules/text/text.module has a status of 1.

cog.rusty’s picture

Do their paths look right in the "filename" field?

And if you run update.php again now, does it still say that they are disabled?

bzsim’s picture

Paths look right: sites/all/modules/cck. I ran update.php again and still the same results. And when I go to my fields list in content type, none of them are there.

I disabled the cck modules and rechecked the database and the status switched to 0. So it seems to be communicating fine. I just don't understand why update is telling me they are disabled? Argh.

cog.rusty’s picture

(moving to wider places)

cog.rusty’s picture

What happens if you first enable *only* the content module from cck and then run update.php?

bzsim’s picture

Same results. I had just content enabled and it attempted to update 31 files on the status bar. It just always goes to the end and says 0 of 31 remaining and then I get the page that says the updates were attempted, the modules are in the folder but not enabled, etc. And it lists all the CCK modules below saying Failed b/c it's not enabled.

cog.rusty’s picture

Is it possible that a second copy of cck has been forgotten somewhere, inside another module (because of a mouse slip) or in sites/all/modules, and is causing confusion?

bzsim’s picture

Well I consulted a programmer (I am a designer/partial developer), and he was able to find a workaround. I don't know exactly what he did, but it involved writing a script that brought in the modules somehow. It worked! I'm ever grateful for you taking the time to try to help me!

Check if you have your field ui module enabled (drupal7).
That's needed to manage the fields.

We are now on our second D7 site where Field UI mysteriously got turned off. Certainly not a conscious action on our part, but turning it back on cleanly resolves the issue.

If you have any aditional information please share.

After some hour of being looking for, you resolved this problem. Thanks!

I faced the same issue on on of my client website..
I looked on the module status first becoz i knew that this thing maintained by a module and finally i found a module i.e. 'Field UI' so I enabled it and flush all the cache then i got all the options again.

thanks
