It would be great to be able to whip up a rapid custom formatter using the basic method (and in particular if using a lot of tokens) and then to be able to convert it on the fly to an advanced type (retaining the token features) for tweaking - possible?

Now available in DRUPAL-6--1-5-BETA2, as well as ability to export basic formatters using the same method.
