We get a fair amount of comments on our site, but most of the replies are anonymous. For reasons I won't get into here, we would rather not force people to create an account before commenting. But we would like to collect an email address. Is there any way to force the user to post an email address before commenting?
Lastly, is there then a way to use notifications to alert that "anonymous" poster when there is a reply posted to their thread?

1. just select the require info option in the comment settings fieldset (once you've given the anonymous role permission to comment).
2. iirc, only the comment_notify and watcher modules can do this for anonymous.
