I've installed image module, image_gallery and image_assist.
It all seems to work fine as long as the image size is decent, lets say around 500 KB: thumbnails and previews are rendered properly. However if my files go towards 800KB I get the following error message:

# warning: imagecreatefromjpeg() [function.imagecreatefromjpeg]: 'files/images/temp/P1010001_notsonew_2.jpg' is not a valid JPEG file in /homepages/18/d126859316/htdocs/newSiteDevelopment/Drupal/includes/image.inc on line 288.
# Unable to create thumbnail image
etc...

I went through all the relating posts on this forum and I know there are some issues here. However I haven't come across postings that refer to this error only occuring from a specific file size on. Is there any way to restrict the file size of image uploads via image module?

Try opening up the file in photoshop or some image editor and then saving it again. I had a similar problem and saving the images again fixed it.
