This is a great module but we need more regions. Are there any other modules that provide similar functionality to this. Maybe some way to do something like this with Panels?

sorry this question was never answered, and technically the version for 6 is EOL now but yes definitely panels would have been another solution. Also display suite, both of which are available in d7 and d8.
