I am looking for some hints and how-tos on the best practices, functions and possibly modules to perform url and POST based xml queries on an external website.
The goal is to extract the data from known XML returns for item selection and database storage of those items.
Does anyone here have any personal preferences or tricks to get the job done?

No clue what's considered best practice, but I use php's simplexml library and it works fine.
