Well,
it is sad to think that project such as http://drupal.org/node/77562 (New system for releasing Drupal contributions) will go totally unnoticed by the vast majority of new comers (because it is not on the frontpage anymore), and forgotten by a big portion of those who read it.
I think it is in the interest of the Drupal development to not "hide" all donation requests.
I suggest a donation button directly on Drupal home page. When user click, it can choose to give to overall drupal project or specific project such as the one above. I hate to think that such project will never make it because of poor donation emphasis.

How Drupal is able to deal with money is a known issue
Pay attention to the results of http://drupalcon.org/node/23 as this seems like the most likely time that decisions will be made. I think that once the issues are resolved about how Drupal can accept donations in general, you'll see more prominent website space given to the task of raising money.

Thanks for the update
Off and on, I've given numerous $10-25 US donations here and there to various projects... the OSL Rackathon, the "New system for releasing Drupal contributions" cited above by brakkar, organic groups, og2list, etc.
I also set up and constantly promote the Projects Needing Financing group so that developers can more easily collect fund for Drupal-related projects. I'm not a developer and, due to my business background, have an easier time raising funds over writing code.
So, it will be nice once Drupal has an easier and more centralized manner for Drupal-related projects to receive the proper recognition and funding via a better positioned/more prominent "donations" button. I know more folks will donate if they see the need, but many of the project donation pages go "out of sight, out of mind" once they sink below visibility on the front page, if they even have the chance to be posted on the front page.
We have lots of bright and eager minds here at Drupal, so if we need a foundation to properly collect, account, and distribute funds, so be it.
