I have been studying SEO and looking at adding keywords to my website but I have read that the search engines ignore keywords. I have also read material on how to use keywords. Drupal doesn't even consider it that important from what I have seen.
Is there a definitive answer on whether to the search engines still use keywords? If so, is there a technique that is best supported by Drupal?

Take a look at
http://drupal.org/project/nodewords ... this will supply fields for on-page optimization and meta-tagging.

I have that module
I have that module enabled on my website but I don't get the fields for entering the phrases. I remember seeing them on another website I built but I don't recollect where the information was located. From what I remember there was a field where the actual phrases went. That is why I was wondering if the search engines even looked for keywords.
Thanks for your help.
After installing the node
After installing the node words module you will get the field from the admin side to enter the keywords for every page. In that you can enter your particular keywords.
Using Keyword for every is the better option for SEO. But only using keywords will not suite the rank of the websites as ranking will be coming from various other factors
The meta keywords tag is
The meta keywords tag is pretty much useless today. It is still important to optimize your page for keywords that you are targeting. For instance, make sure your target keyword is in your Page Title and in your h1 tag. Drupal does an ok job at doing this by default, but there are other modules out there that help out. Look at the page title module too: http://drupal.org/project/page_title
Content is King
Google ignores 'keywords'. But Yahoo and other small search engines like meta 'keywords' tag. It is good idea to use keywords.
Keywords
While researching a particular website that was built in the Drupal environment, I noticed that every page w/in the site has no meta - keyword info in the code. Are keywords inserted differently using Drupal? Any help on this is greatly appreciated. I can't understand why a website would not have any keywords listed as I have always understood them to be critical to SEO and SEM strategies. Thanks!
keywords listed in meta tags
keywords listed in meta tags were important several years ago, in fact now we can say many years ago..
Now you can do without any, won't make a difference. But I still put some (automatically with module nodewords) because I'm old and I have old habits.
Target
If you put your targeted keywords In your site Which are seen and highly ranked in search engines then We have a benifit of Keywords to rank in search engines
