Does anyone know if there's a way to format an mp3 download link in such a way that it forces iTunes to handle the file? (Assuming iTunes is installed.) If not, is there a way to make iTunes the default handler for mp3 links in webpages? (I'm looking for simple instructions that I can pass on to my users who also use iTunes.)
The goal is to make it as easy as possible for non-tech-savvy users to get mp3 files from my site to their iPods. One of my users said she used the download link (as is) and iTunes downloaded it and sync'd it to her iPod, all automatically. Perfect! But... Another user said that when she clicked on the download link, it played within the browser, with QuickTime.

vm commentedthis soley depends on a users settings for the mime type on the machine side.
right-click on an .mp3 file choose open with, and choose itunes. check the box underneath that says, use this to open all files of this type
you cannot override a users default from the web, as they may not even have itunes installed.

sunVeryMisunderstood is right, this is the expected and wanted behaviour for all browsers on all platforms. There is no way to override local file type handler settings. Allowing this would be a major security risk.
