Description

Hi Jaza and all,

i've been scratching my itch quite a lot in these past days trying to figure out what would be the best way for categorizing contents of a site i am lauching soon....Category or core Taxonomy? ..not an easy choice.

Category is a stunning module (i personally like it lot) that could simplify many aspects of life on Drupal, and *potentially* be the natural follower of core Taxonomy module. The advantages it offers are many (just to nominate some of the most relevant: Terms and Vocabularies as nodes, Tables of Contents, Reliable breadcrumbs, Automatic menu items creation, Bulk updating, ... for more have a look here or here).

The fact that made me stop and think was the dilemma between it's brilliant intuitions and functionalities, and the work that is actually needed (and lacking since some time) to go ahead in it's developement and get it reliable enough (quite a lot of critical bugs and performance issues need to be fixed and other issues tweaked -> see the issues list) to be used in big production sites.
Many questions arised:

  • will Category be mantained over 4.8 (5.0)?
  • will Jaza ever find the time to solve the various 4.7 bugs?
  • should i worry about those memory and performance issues?

It's understandable that Jaza can not afford to offer Category all the time it requires for free (it's quite big and complex module package all in all), so here comes a proposal:

why not launch a bounty petition between the Category fans to collect a fair amount of money and commit Jaza (or other developer in case he is too busy) to put his hands on the Category.module with the attentions it deserves?

If this sounds an interesting possibility to anyone of you, we could use this thread for collecting the money and the priorities. When a fair amount will be reached and the developer found, we can then deliver the commitment.

So if you like this module and want to take a step toward it's enhancement, please consider leaving your donation amount togheter with the priority issue(s) you would like to see fixed (and comments in case you have!) below here.

Here is mine to start with:

Thanks for your call to help, and for your offer of assistance, Marco.

In response to this post, I have published an announcement on the category module web site:

I hope that this announcement addresses your concerns, and that i gives you a bit more peace of mind.
