goto admin/settings/ and in the site maintenance part of the page enable the offline mode. and the same way you can unlock it... but when you logout you will not be able view the site.
yoursite.com/?q=user did not work for me on geny.com ???
I changed the offline message and logged out assuming there would be a place to log back in...theres not and your suggested addy does not exist...I have clean urls so I also tried taking out the /?q=
I had the same fear when I went offline for the first time yesterday, but it's not a big deal. If you log out (I kept my site down from the time I left the office to when I arrived home and was able to log back in), just do as described above to log back in. Easy as pie.

You must keep the admin session on.
login back trough user/
you CAN logout and login by going to user/
this means you can logout, and log back in without problems, no need to keep your session.
it might be handy to keep a maintance login link to user/ in your offline message
less == more
That scares me
I don't want to get locked out of my website.
Dont afraid
You can log back in with
yoursite.com/?q=user
