I've read the minimal documention on these modules but I'm still very confused.
1) Do you need the image module to use the image_assist module?
2) When posting, users get two image upload options (one from each module I assume) I know how to turn off the image_assist posting option, but how to turn off image posting option?
3) Teasers seem to display the image thumbnail on the right, while page nodes show the image to the left and not inline. Is this a function of the .css files?
4) Is there a better image upload option out there in modules? (frankly, these modules seem very poorly implemented and confusing, both to users and struggling admins.) I just want a simple way for a user to upload or provide a link to an image. I want the size and formatting to be controlled by the admin.
The more I work with these two modules, the more confused I get!

img_assist or image_attach?
If you're referring to img_assist, which adds a pop-up window so that users can place images in a post without having to use HTML, code or know the location of the image, then yes. If you're referring to image_attach (I sometimes mistake the two, because they look the same in the modules list), which attaches an image to the top of a post (which designers can then modify the position of using CSS), then, well, also yes. :) The Image module is required for both.
Do you mean that you see a button below the area to type in a body when you're at node/add/image (adding an image using the Image module, that is)? If that's what you mean, then it's possible to tell img_assist where it appears. In image » settings » img_assist replace "
node/*
" with the following:And so on for every content type, but without including node/add/image Which is kind of tedious, but that should work.
If you mean the image_attach, you can set it on a per content-type basis, under administer » settings » content types and click "configure" for each content type. At or near the end of each should be a setting for attaching images.
Could be: the teaser with the image_attach has a CSS class "image-attach-teaser" where in the body it's "image-attach-body". Take a look at the
contrib/image_attach/image_attach.css
file. Again I'm assuming that you meant image_attach and not img_assist in this case.To answer your last question, there are some other image modules, including Flickr integration (the Flickr module and Flickr Hood modules) and a module called Shazam Gallery, not to mention integration with Gallery, but that requires installing the Gallery software as well.

Yes, I'm using img_assist
Here's a screen grab that might explain a bit better what I was talking about. The upload image option looks like it's part of core, but if so, it needs to be turned off if a person is using image assist. Can't see how though. What I really want, is an easy way for a user to upload or link to a picture, that will show a thumbnail in the teaser and a full size picture (downsized to a max dimension) in the full node text.
here's the screen grab:

image_attach
That's the image_attach module (which comes part of the Image module bundle) that's doing what you point out in the screenshot. The image module—just the image module—will show a thumbnail in the teaser and the full image in the individual page. Disable the image_attach module but keep the Image module and you should be fine.
The img_assist module (completely separate module, not the one that adds that attachment thing at the bottom) will allow users to insert already-uploaded images to their blog posts, for example. It gives you a pop-up window where you can also upload new images to place in content. That might be what you're looking for for linking images.

Thanks!
That helps a lot. I'll go back and explore that, but so far I only get a thumbnail size on both the teaser and main body posts. I'll try disabling the image_attach and try again.
I'd just use the image attach option except for one limitation: It seems you can only attach one image per node. img_assist allows several images to be attached and positioned in the body of a single node.
Display Image Large in Main Body Posts
If I understand your problem correctly, I think this might help. Edit the image.module file, go to the section below:
----------------------
/**
* Theme a teaser
*/
function theme_image_teaser($node) {
return l(image_display($node, 'thumbnail'), 'node/'. $node->nid, array(), NULL, NULL, TRUE, TRUE) . $node->teaser;
}
-----------------------------
Change the word 'thumbnail' above to 'preview' and save -- this will display the image in preview size in the main body post while retaining thumbnail sizes in all other areas. Go to the admin area and set up your own size for the preview.

Can you really disable image_attach but still attach images?
Hi Richard,
You wrote:
"The image module—just the image module—will show a thumbnail in the teaser and the full image in the individual page."
Do you mean that JUST USING IMAGE you can attach an image to a story-type node and have it show up as a thumbnail in the node list and a full image in the story?
This is what I want to do but I can't figure out how to do it! Without image_attach how do you attach the image?
- well, let me clarify that. I don't care whether I use image_attach or not - I just want a thumbnail in the node list and a full image in the story, and I can't seem to figure out any combination of image, image_attach and img_assist that does that...

Both
No, using just the image module creates an image node type of its own. You need image + image_attach to attach an image to a story (or other type of) node. You're probably better off just using the image + img_assist combo, though, since that way you can place the image wherever you like.

In the end I
In the end I edited
modules/image/contrib/image_attach/image_attach.module
In theme_image_attach_body, I changed
to
This gives me a thumbnail of the attached image in the teaser list, and a preview-sized image in the story, which is what I wanted.

Nice!
Perfect! This is exactly what I needed. Now how do you remove the link from the image that points back to the exact same page?
