I'm working on a human rights project and am trying to get a sense of whether Drupal is an appropriate platform for the project. I would also like to get a very rough sense of development time for the project (I can provide features via email to anyone who is willing to consult).

The project is not-for-profit and is currently unfunded; my request is thus for a developer who is willing to consult without, at least for the moment, getting paid.

Have a look at CivicSpace and CiviCRM, very useful for any sort of organizational website.

Thanks for the pointers. I must say I'm a bit perplexed by CivicSpace. They're apparently now a private company, and I'm assuming 1.0 will be a commercial release. But then at the same time, you can download the latest pre-commercial release. In any event, I'll post a question there as well and see if I can't get some feedback.

The merchantability of FLOSS (open source) is nil. You can sell fringe benefits and support, but you can't charge for the actual software application. CivicSpace has a large community so I don't doubt there will always be some way to get support for free.

CivicSpace remains committed to making an open source download for civic organizations avaliable. Our mission is to get as many civic organizations a sophistocated technology platform. But somebody does have to pay for the work.

We are currently focused on releasing an ASP version of CivicSpace... get CivicSpace through your web browser for a monthly subscription fee. This is the business side of things.

We have done all the coding for Drupal 5.0 (and have contrinbuted it to the community) to ensure that a simple CivicSpace distribution (Drupal +CiviCRM) can be downloaded and installed by a person with very basic technology skills (installers, etc.).

Ultimately, you'll see us act more like a private company, but we are here to fulfill our mission, not make a million bucks.

Hi, I would like to work on a real drupal-site, just to get some hands on experience. Off course I would be doing this in my free time so it won't go as fast as if you would be paing someone. But I'll try to give your project as much attention as possible. The only thing I've done till now is creating my personal page but I've got most ins and outs of the drupal core by now.
Rather just use standard-drupal in stead of civicspace

Drupal has huge potential for organizing and getting your message out and connecting people.

See this which demonstrates the use of organic groups for local group conversations in a Peak Oil environmental site for Vermont, USA. (Site in the development stage.)

Also see my thorough mock-up for a socially responsibe business organization here that demos many features useful to Non-Profits and organizations that need to work closely with many other companies or members. Please bear in mind that this is a mock-up and not all features are fully functional.

Please keep in mind, both of these sites have been given minimal design treatment and drupal can look like this or this.

I'd love to take a look at your feature list and I'm sure Drupal will exceed your expectations in many respects!
