External Links appears to be converting quotation marks to " and apostrophes to ', which makes the Typogrify module unable to convert them to typographer's quotes.

I've solved it by disabling External links, but it would be great if these two modules could coexist in harmony.

I think this was a faulty diagnosis. Although it was happening with External Links enabled, stopped when I disabled it, and resumed when I re-enabled it, I think the time I disabled it I must have saved the node in Source view in the WYSIWYG editor, because the problem seems to be editor-related. Sorry, my bad.
