Foliage theme discussion

netbjarne - September 24, 2006 - 06:30

I've created this thread for discussion of the Foliage theme. Although its possible to bug reports and feature-requests the project page, I think its interesting to share ideas, hints on improvements, support questions, things that may go by unnoticed, should they not fall under the bug or feature-request categories. Thus this thread.

Not a lot of discussion. I am actually thinking about using it on my photo website.
Looks really good and is a really nice addition to the otherwise rather dull theme library.

Folliage is good to go and easy to edit!

Johnny - September 26, 2006 - 21:10

I like this theme!
Will integrate well with Gallery2.
Will get back with you after I try tinyMCE with it .

Check out how I changed the settings with ease @ http://mybanffphotographer.com
The Colour still has to be sorted out but its clean and simple and won't conflict to much with videos and images of 400ppi wide

thanks,

Johnny

Might even give Friends Electric a rest and use this on http://therockymtnblog.com !

Nice Work

Folliage on Mozilla Camino

Johnny - October 22, 2006 - 08:49

Hello Everyone,

I have been really putting this theme through some heavy duty testing...

I have just loaded up pretty good size slide show into the blocks of http://therockymtnblog.com

At first I really was sure if was going to fly with the 5mb to 6mb files embedded as the firefox was not digging the heavy duty uploads.

I then tried it out on the http://www.mozilla.org/projects/camino/ browser and heck it handles the quicktime slideshows like they were nothing at all. Man this browser is fast as well! On top of that the TinyMCE is agreeing with this browser which seems to be a cross between Safari & Firefox... I like it to say the least!

Hopes this helps
Cheers,

Johnny

I guess this means I will have to redo my on site video tutorial on how to use my site...

I like what you have done!

netbjarne - November 10, 2006 - 09:50

Nice work Johnny!

What have you done to implement the mouse-over menues in the blocks? Some JavaScript thing?

How is your experience with TinyMCE and the Foliage theme?. I have not had the time to test it completely yet.

Best regards

Drupal 6.0 and Foliage

Johnny - October 19, 2007 - 21:43

With so many themes now on Drupal it is still amazing that Foliage is still the one i choose for my money making site and the one many of my clients choose as well. Everyone will be migrating to Drupal 6.0 within the next 6 months. The theme is very flexible and I am very much interested in working more with this theme as well. I have not dropped the ball in knowing the ins and outs with this theme. Most of my clients like it because the navigation is pretty straight forward and clean. It's presentation of images over 1000px wide is still in professional way nothing less than acceptable compared to most of the fixed width and liquid themes offered with Drupal. I am currently working on editing the php the run a gpl flash header with no boarders. This theme should not be left behind in the Drupal 6 upgrade in the very near future!

Kind Regards,
Johnny

7.4.3 Header Footer graphibcs not found

brentb - October 5, 2006 - 00:22

Hello,
first love the template. I am having trouble getting the header and footer graphic to display. Have not changed the theme directory stucture. The log says:
Page not Found themes/foliage/foot960.jpg not found. Sort of a newbie so maybe I am just doind something wrong. Also, What is the best resource to learn how to customize default themes?

Thanks,

Brent

Fixed and hints

netbjarne - October 5, 2006 - 17:36

Hi Joist82

I'm glad you like Foliage. Regarding the missing header and footer graphic, there was a small bug in the stylesheet, causing this error when the site was placed in a subdirectory. The bug is fixed in the cvs version of Foliage, that should be available for download tomorrow.

http://drupal.org/node/509 is a handbook page with theming tips. A bit advanced though.

I've also given some hints in the readme file of the newest version of Foliage, so take a look at that.

Alter style.css

acmevil - November 25, 2006 - 15:44

I also met the problem of the Header and Footer graphics not be found before. Finally, I found a easy way to resolve this problem. I modified two among those lines in the themes/foliage/style.css
}
#header {
background-color: #8c3;

background-image: url('themes/foliage/head960.jpg');
//alter the up row to be background-image: url('head960.jpg');

height: 100%;
....

}
#footer {
background-color: #8c3;

background-image: url('themes/foliage/foot960.jpg');
//alter the up row to be background-image: url('foot960.jpg');

height: 30px;

Try it! Or refer to my page http://acmevil.taes.tp.edu.tw/drupal/?q=node/26

Nice Menus

gmasky - October 21, 2006 - 19:26

Hi,

I am trying the foliage theme on localhost. I have tried using nice_menus in the header but it does not display correctly...that is at the bottom of the header. I hv a part of the header picture showing below the nice menus. Ideally I would like nice_menus to display like at http://rosskendall.com.

Any idea how I can do this.

Thanks

Change site name text decoration?

Grinin - November 8, 2006 - 17:38

Hello everyone. First off, I would like to say that the original Foliage is a wonderfully designed theme which allows people to modify the crap out of it! Now, I don't want to piss off the original designer, but a client of mine did like the layout on foliage, and asked me to change it to include their company colors which happen to be absolutely hideous, unpleasing to the eye, and for some ungodly reason they refuse to let me use anything but these hideous colors.

This being said, I was wondering what I have to modify in the CSS to get the header title to be bold or how I could change the font of just the site name?

the test site can be see at http://ima.chrisllorca.com

Basically, they want the font to be less blah... like bold, or wider (not character spacing) but like a "fatter font" they say.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Again, I love the original theme, and I'm sorry I had to massacre it and turn it into this. :(

Taste is different ;-)

netbjarne - November 10, 2006 - 09:43

Turn foliage into whatever you like - I'm glad you can use it at all. I see it as a showcase on how its possible to grap a functional theme others have be working hard on - applying some minor changes - and turn it into something completely else - without much knowledge of css at all..

Regarding you question - my approach would be setting the "font family" in the "#header section" of the style.css files. I took your file, and added "font-family: Impact;" - that did the trick. Impact is a common fat font on windows platform, but I don't know if its available on other platforms - maybe http://browsershots.org/ can help you there?

#header { background-color: white; background-image: url(/themes/foliage/head960.jpg); height: 100px; border: solid 1px #ccc;
font-family: Impact;
}

One note on http://ima.chrisllorca.com - I would change the favicon as well for consistency.

path to images not always correct

vjordan - January 4, 2007 - 11:52

Bjarne,

Nice theme and I plan to adapt and use it for an upcoming project. I noticed a small problem with the path to images which I've logged as a bug here: http://drupal.org/node/106787

Well done on the theme. Any plans to make it available for v5?

Vincent

Foliage for v5?

vjordan - January 8, 2007 - 18:06

I'm using a slightly modified foliage theme on a new site I'm working on. My modifications are only to the images displayed, colour scheme and fonts. It's working really well with v4.7. I'd like to get the site onto v5 before launch of my new site if possible. Foliage for v5 is crucial to this - otherwise I'll stick with 4.7.

I've found the Foliage theme "works" with v5, insofar as the site looks okay with that theme selected. I realise a 4.7 theme in a v5 install will make certain features unavailable. I searched drupal.org for guidance on the issues of porting a theme from 4.7 to 5.0. It seems the main guidance is at:
http://drupal.org/node/64292

My questions:
1) What problems have foliage theme users experienced using foliage as-is with v5?
2) Bjarne, have you plans, or a work in progress, for porting foliage over to v5?
3) What kind of assistance would be useful to you in this project?

I haven't coded for a few years. Okay so maybe I should admit it's been a good few years. But I would help out with the V5 port.

Thanks, Vincent

No immediate v5 foliage plans...

netbjarne - January 8, 2007 - 20:54

I hope not to disappoint anyone - but I have no current plans to create a Drupal 5.0 version of the Foliage theme. There are several reasons for that:

a) No matter how eager I am to get my hands on Drupal 5.0, theres not this "killer feature" that requires me to upgrade my sites - Drupal 4.7 still have so much to offer that I do not utilize properly yet. This may change.

b) Some of the modules I use on my 4.7 sites are not available for Drupal 5.0 - this may also change.

c) Foliage is not a revolution, but only a modified BlueMarine theme. I'm satisfied with how it looks - but - I'm also a bit drawn by the looks of the Garland theme - maybe I should hack that a bit?

That said. I have also tried applying the Foliage theme to a Drupal 5.0 (beta something) installation, and apparently it works fine. That might indicated that only minor changes are necessary to make Foliage proper 5.0 compatible. Anyone who would like to dig into this? I'd be happy to share CVS access..

Hello All! Foliage works fine and dandy in 5.0

Johnny - January 19, 2007 - 06:57

As I am still looking for the the perfect theme for the evolution of my site http://therockymtnblog.com I have made the bold move of uploading Foliage into my 5.0 theme folder and Drupal 5.0 accepts it with only a few upsets in the admin pages - nothing to serious and once again no errors.

Until I have proper amount time to create a good flexible theme to do what I need I will be keeping to trusty old Foliage.

5.0 Rocks!

TinyMCE module did not show up on foliage theme

dide - January 23, 2007 - 15:32

I have test this foliage theme on Drupal 5, it's show my content well, but when I want to make a new content, I cannot use/see TinyMCE on text area.

then after a long journey, I remember that foliage is based on bluemarine, so I overwrite bluemarine style.css using foliage style.css, and I don't know why TinyMCE now appear again. now I just do not know what's wrong about foliage style.css.

Thank you

Congrats on quick release for 5.0

Johnny - February 5, 2007 - 09:32

It is good to see Foliage keeping up with the 5.0 Bunch!

I am still working on some CSS drop down menus but with my paying work overwhelming my day it is still going to be at least a week till I can pour some more time into this. Just don't have to much spare time right now as I have too many sites needing maintaining. I really want to see more css drop downs menus in Drupal. I know it's got to be possible as these guys over at http://www.dynamicdrive.com/ have plenty of drop down menu code in CSS the whole catch is applying it to Drupal.

I am also in the middle of CSS course and hopefully when that is finished I will have more direction to implement this into Drupal. I am really trying here as for all that Drupal has to offer out of the Box its crazy that there still isn't a theme that has drop downs. I know Ross Kendall - http://rosskendall.com has a great beta drop down in 4.7 and I have been studding his CSS file. But I have not pulled the magic out of the hat yet as my CSS skills are still learning the drop down selectors.

These forums is all I got for bouncing ideas and learning the ends and outs as nobody in my daily walk has a clue what CSS drop down code is, let alone what a CSS is. This is only one of my goals during the 5.0 learning curve as there is still a lot to Drupal besides the CSS.

Great work for pulling Foliage out of the 4.7 woodwork so quickly!

Johnny

Print.css available

vjordan - February 6, 2007 - 15:32

I've been using Bjarne's foliage theme for v5 since he released it. I have added a print.css stylesheet and the necessary code change to page.tpl.php . The details can be found in an "issue" for foliage as I can't upload attachments to this discussion forum. Details available on: http://drupal.org/node/116482

problem with primary menus

mikehughes - March 1, 2007 - 16:42

I downloaded the HEAD version of this theme (http://drupal.org/node/72862/release) ... is this for Drupal 4.7? It looks nice on my site but where there should be primary menus I get the messages "linksArraynavlist linksArraysubnavlist" ... I expect I am being dumb but can someone help me sort this out? I thought it was cos I needed nice menus which I just installed but still get this problem. If I go to blocks and turn on primary menu I can only get this in the header, left, content or footer position and not where it should be.

Cheers
Mike

That's for v5

vjordan - March 2, 2007 - 12:20

HEAD must be on the v5 release the "linksArraynavlist" is the v5 term for primary links (the v4.7 term). I know netbjarne previously had difficulties with cvs release management and they might be recurring now.

I can't get favicon.ico to stick on Foliage

daviding - March 15, 2007 - 12:02

I've modified Foliage to change the width down from 960px to 850px, but otherwise haven't changed much except the images.

How do I change the favicon.ico? Uploading it into the foliage directory doesn't seem to make a difference, and setting it manually on the Theme page doesn't seem to take hold. I continue to get the green leaf in my Firefox tab.

(I had managed to change the favicon on a Drupal 4.7 site ... but something seems to be different, here).

Never mind ... restart the browser!

daviding - March 15, 2007 - 16:16

I should have thought to restart the browser ....

Mission in foliage

hopfrog - June 24, 2007 - 06:37

Is it possible to add "mission"? Or as I can create one section just in beginning of "content"? A
fixed container serves me where to insert some links but I do not succeed to create it.
With "page" or "story" it occupies very many space!
I ask excuse but I do not know English...

change block menu item style

ewm7712 - June 9, 2008 - 22:36

Hello,

I'm trying to change the colors of the menu items in my navigation block but am unable to find "leaf" in in the style.css or anything that refers to the menu items. Any help would be appreciated.
