Category Module Formatting

Hello everyone, I have an interesting question for all to see :-P

Bascially I want to format the tables that are generated in the category module to look customized to the styles of my site.

A TOC for example my look good like such, but I'd also like to make the top levels bold. I also want to change spacing and other attributes. Does anyone know a good way to do this? Also a bit more advanced, I have a lot of data in certain sections and would like it to appear on more than one column if possible. If anyone can help it'd be great thanks.
