I was wondering if there are any additional benefits of pmail module, such as the emails not being recognized as spam by email providers like gmail? I would appreciate any information on this.

I can only cite MailChimp on this issue:

Include the recipient's name in the message using merge tags [N.B.: that's what MailChimp calls tokens] to make it more personal and help avoid spam filters.

Let's turn this issue into a task to make the documentation better, which is, admittedly, awful. Patches are welcome.
