Around one year ago I decided to build a bingo comparison website since I know a lot of people in the industry and if these types of websites become popular they can be quite valuable.
At the time I worked in a London based web agency that had their own CMS... commercial and quite expensive so I wasnt going to use that but I was extremely aware of all of the functionality a good CMS should have. I kept hearing the name Drupal popping up in conversion between the techies as it was their CMS of choice when doing sites in their own time. Now I first looked at Joomla and it seemed more user friendly and straight forward to work with but when I started looking into modifications, modules, SEO friendliness, html editor integration and the way the system worked from an architecture and scalability perspective Drupal won hands down. Another important thing was that Drupal is actively being developed and Joomla cannot even compare on that aspect.
As I'm not a developer but I can understand html, some code and can easily embed JScript or JQuery with a bit of playing (which I enjoy) I found Drupal a bit of a learning curve but with determination I always got to where I wanted to be.. mainly thankfully to all the modules and the support of this forum.
Looking back I definitely made the right choice and I dont know where I would have ended up had I of chosen Joomla but one thing is for sure... for all my future sites I wouldn't even think about using another CMS. I have friends that are developers and insist on building a CMS from scratch or using their own coded system because they know it 100%... OK I get this bit but if I asked them for a site with file versioning, to integrate phpBB, to have personalisation/tagging, integrate with specific HTML editors, have search engine friendly URLs, allow the users to edit Meta Data etc etc etc then it will take him ages to modify while I have been able to do all of this with Drupal rapidly with very little programming experience.
Anyway the site compares the best bingo sites for UK players... there is still a lot to do but it has been live for about 4 months to date and is doing quite well in the search engines thanks to SE friendly URLs, clean code and some modules that allow me to easily edit the Page Title and Meta Data on a page by page basis.
Take a look and let me know what you think, here is the link:
