A few items (fields, OOP) might make this a challenge to develop in both D6 and D7. I think I'm leaning towards making this a D7-only project so we can focus on making this work well while we try to get nodewords cleaned and working, then end-of-life it.

D6 too, we need to replace the existing Nodewords module that is a massive state of disarray.

I'm with Damien. The D6 version is absolutely monstrous, with 10-15 versions released in the space of a few months, and 6x-2.0 and 6x-3.0 versions also existing. Currently there is 6.x-1.12 with MANY betas under that. Confusing! Every new release introduces new functionality that most people don't want or need (and usually some bugs, some very serious and data-damaging), and removes previous functionality that many people found useful. I would love a greatly simplified meta tags module that emulates what the old one used to do (generate meta tags automatically from the node's content).

Hello, just giving an opinion. Either making a D6 version of this module or a proper nodewords D6 one, that'be great, however, I was worried about something on the project page:

It will likely only be developed using Drupal 7 and will not have any backwards-compatibility with Nodewords.

Does this mean there won't be an upgrade path from nodewords D6 to meta tags D7?

Keeping track of this...

After much consideration, I strongly feel that Metatags should be D7-only, and that Nodewords should handle the upgrade path separately.

damienmckenna’s picture

Correction: Metatags will provide an optional upgrade path from Nodewords but will not support D6 itself.

I haven't gone into any D7 development yet, so It's kind of a blind comment, but.. is too much of an effort to maintain this module for both versions? I mean, is the development that different?

I am only asking this because of the discussion that's going on nodewords as well. It is an important module and it has already being mentioned by you that a rewrite will consume just too much effort, so was curious about the amount of effort required to work on this module for D6 at the same time as D7.

A D7 version will be simpler and take advantage of the Field API and many other API improvements.

i'd say write a D6 version, that is compatible with D7 as an upgrade path.

would also suggest, absorb integrated metatags module

Meta tags are important part of SEO, Drupal cannot be serious system without SEO and meta tags. I would recommend to fix old nodewords-metatags module (even the name is confusing) whicever, in a way to enable basic meta tags stuff, keywords and description that is mostly used and needed to be able to make proper site. Also add i18n support in any way possible, most multilang sites are sites with heavy need for SEO and this makes it harder to do bussines and use drupal for serious bussineses.

Is there already a dev release to try and give feedback?

bdunwood’s picture

Subscribing. D7 is on the verge of a RC1 release but there aren't any builds of this important module...

dave reid’s picture

@bdunwood: Do you see a D7CX pledge on the module front page? No? Then just put 'subscribe'. We're still in the planning stages and most of our focus is helping get Nodewords for d6 stable.

@Dave Reid, not trying to ruffle feathers. Thanks for the update. Is there any kind of rough target for a D7 alpha build of this module?

Subscribing here. Would love to know when an estimated timeframe for any kind of release for this module will be?

dave reid’s picture

There is no estimated timeframe.

dropbydrop’s picture

Please do the D7 version first.
Is there any other alternative now?

sammyman’s picture

No alternative. I think this is the most important and last module I am waiting. I think it is a huge factor for any site.

dave reid’s picture

No one has to wait for this module. Your site can do well without it right now.

Hello Dave,
can you tell us, or give us a Keyword how we can implement Meta Tags and Meta Description in Drupal 7 ?

Thank you

There is no way at this point.
